Before knowing these, I would like to throw some light on the war of Mahabharata, the war of Mahabharata took place in Kurukshetra. This is the same Kurukshetra which is today Kurukshetra of Haryana. The war of Mahabharata was fought between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. This day was Sunday and this day was Ekadashi and in about 45 minutes Shri Krishna ji narrated the lesson of Shrimad Bhagwat Gita to Arjuna. Now the question comes that why did Shri Krishna ji narrated the teachings of Shrimad Bhagwat Gita to Arjuna before the war? The answer is to teach Arjuna, who has strayed from duty, and preached Dharma and knowledge to the next generation.
On the other hand, if we talk about the total chapters, Shrimad Bhagwat Gita has 18 chapters and 700 verses, in which detailed explanations have been given about the paths of knowledge, devotion, karma and yoga. By following these paths, a person definitely attains the supreme position. Apart from Arjuna, Dhritarashtra and Sanjaya had heard Shrimad Bhagwat Gita. Lord Surya Dev had received the holy knowledge of Shrimad Bhagwat Gita even before Arjuna. It should also be mentioned here that Gita is counted in religious texts like Upanishads. The Gita is a part of the chapter Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata and Geetopanishad is also another name for the Gita. The essence of Gita is to take shelter of Lord Shri Krishna. If we talk about how many verses have been uttered in Shrimad Bhagwat Gita, Shri Krishna ji has said 574 verses, Arjuna has said 85 verses, while Dhritarashtra has said 1 verse, Sanjaya has said 40 verses.
